Thoughts

The swifts swoop and dive I see them and I think of you Because had we believed in reincarnation And why shouldn’t we? You would come back as a swift The perennial swift Part of a diasporic flock But independent mover Kinetic, relentlessly in the air Always working for the next… What? Impossible to capture A miracle in flight Borne on the wing, to the wing Yet helpless on the ground And then disappear one day As autumn’s coming on Leaving me To spend the diminishing daylights Without their soaring souls To lift us on the currents with them To lift our hearts, our spirits Oh! Please don’t go. Did you really have to go? (posted by Mimi, one year on)

I met Don in London, through our mutual friend Francesca, over 40 years ago. We shared the same love for photography!! I have always had a good memory of him as a very gentle, kind and reserved person. Dear Mimi and Sam, even if l never met you personally, l feel like telling you about my feeling in Memory of Don Ciao Don! Chiara Rassu.

I shall always be grateful for Don and Mimi's unfailing understanding and support over the past 21 years, while I have been occupying their former workshop at Forest Gate. When talking to Don, I always felt we were on the same wavelength: we instinctively seemed to understand each other. His British Railways clock – from Retford, I think – is still ticking and when I look at it I think of him.
